Obamacan in the Senate?

Topic: Congress, Politics, Republican Politics|

There is no more diverse state politically than Oregon. Portland is as liberal as any city in the US including San Francisco but if you go east you find yourself next to Idaho and conservatism breathes in these locales. But this election is unique and the winds of change favor Barack Obama. One GOP senator seems to understand the nature of this election and he has hitched his wagon to the Illinois Senator in a new ad.

It is unheard of for a candidate from one party to identify with the nominee from the other party but Oregon Senator Gordon Smith has done just that. His ad shows Senator Obama’s website and also refers to Oregon’s Democratic Governor Ted Kulongoski. The advertisement is intended to show Smith’s ability to be bipartisan but the message is much more than that. The waves sweeping on Oregon’s shores these days are much bluer than in the past and Senator Smith wishes not to drown in the high tide. The impact of this ad may very well work for Senator Smith but he won’t win any friends in his party for running it. But if he indeed wins and the scales tip favorably toward the Democrats in Congress, Senator Smith will be able to put his bipartisan experience to work.

There is another element to this tactic by Senator Smith. There is not a feeling of disdain about either Barack Obama or John McCain. This climate has allowed for the Oregon GOP senator to air his ad. The vitriol that has served as the sword of Damocles the past several decades has been tamped down in this election.  Thankfully, mouthpieces such as Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter and Michael Moore have been marginalized and with the nature and depth of the problems that the new President must face this can only be a good sign for our country.

An Obamacan is a Republican who supports Barack Obama

I apologize if my first post is a rant, but then, what are blogs for, eh?

    Michelle Malkin…Ann Coulter…Michael Moore
??? Did I misread the article?

By placing Moore in the same sentence as the “Screaming Bitches” of the Republican right, infers his work is as shallow as their hysteria driven rants gives me a real headache. It means that the work MM did to bring the reality of the NRA being the driving force behind legislation on gun control was garbage. His pursuit of the money grubbing CEO of GM of no importance, and of equal moral value as that of useless, hate mongering cretans, as are Malkin and Coulter. I guess I need to watch FOXNEWS more often, here I thought holding criminals accountable was a respectable goal.

As far as the Republican in Oregon working Democrats, Nancy Boyda is appearing to be a Democrat working as hard as she can to court Republicans. Voting for each and every pro war bill that crosses her desk and supporting the illegal wiretapping with her “AYE” on last weeks’ FISA bill, I shudder at the thought of working for her re-election. I am really having doubts as to how I will deal with her come election day. I will hit the streets for the Dems, knocking on doors and letting neighbors know there are Democrats in Kansas, but I will probably be carrying a sign outside the Boyda office, citing her voting record. Again, holding criminals accountable. This time the crime is “pandering to GW”!

Love it, Bill. Keep em coming. Rants are welcome. You know and I know Boyda has the opposite problem as Senator Smith in Oregon. She can’t sling that ax too far left or Kansans will take it away from her. I’m with you on the FISA bill, brother. A sad day.

About lumping Moore in with the two others. It is about the visceral reaction these three attract from the left and the right. With all the problems this country faces right now we need to move away from the extremes and be pragmatic. Let’s start with a revolutionary energy policy that doesn’t involve drilling. It seems Cro-Magnon man has returned when fools suggest that as the answer. You gotta love Thomas Friedman’s op-ed on the issue: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/22/opinion/22friedman.html
