What Lesson from the Holocaust?
The region’s only democracy Israel’s proponents decry. Is this the type of democracy we want to support? It is time to cut loose this alliance.

McAabee (proably mis-spelled) is Israeli beer. They can’t make wine to save their hides but that is some great beer they make. NIt sure if they drink it. Maybe they should drink a few cases with the Plestinians. Why not! Nothing else seems to work!
Good idea Ramos. Cheers Dude

How come this never made it on ABC, CBS, NBC or any other 1830 news cast by Monday the 4th? Ah Sorry, dumb question!! I saw the Aljazeera bit. Same response as in the past. We are working on it. Blah! Blah! Diplomacy don’t work between these folks. Both sides want to be 100% correct. I still think they should go for the BEER! At least they could have some fun while there chewing each other ears off. Happy trails, Juan

Jews drink beer, Muslims don’t. Here is a good op-ed on the whole enterprise from my favorite journalist. Don’t be shy about signing in, it is free:

I clicked onto your nytimes.co item and agree there is bad marriage squabble, of many in the past. The marriage squable is between the Israelis and the Plestinians. Not the USA and the Israelis. How many squablles do they have to have to get on the road to better times? Well, they are not married so they can’t get divorced. So what is the next best thing? These dudes (Isrealis and Arabs-Plestinians)are brothers and sisters, albeit from the same Father but different Mother (if we believe scripture) but still they have all forgotten where they have all came from. Same Daddy but different Mommy. So what the heck makes them so dern different? Just because one holy book says one thing and another holy book says something else. There has not been a single one of them that has questioned “Hold on here, Where the heck are we goining with all of this”? Faith is only as good as it is good for GOOD of all prople, not just the few. No mattter what your faith is, or even if you have no faith at all. What matters is “Treat others the way you want to be treated”. With dignity and respect. We don’t have to even like each other, but just respect each other and HEAR each other out without killing each others childrens. Remember, KILL our KIDS. KILLS The FUTURE.
And all of this is coming from a born Puertorican raised in The Bronx, New York; who has lived in Jeddah for two years, who has been in Tal Aviv, who has seen the beauty of both cultures and who has been mis-taken for both Arab and Israeli. Come on guys put your beliefs aside for just a short time and do what is right for your people.

Wow. The United States actually taking a stand against an Israeli move rather than unconditionally backing whatever whim overtakes them?
Clearly Obama is the next Hitler.

Good points all. The only thing I have to add is the spat between Arabs and Israelis has gone beyond just religion (although it is the elephant in the room at all times). The treatment of Palestinians since 1948 has been deplorable and has led to the violent place we are now at and Israel continues to ratchet up their exclusivity. The problem is Israel is a “Jewish state”. How can anyone who is not Jewish who resides in its borders feel accepted under such a title?

Even though I would agree with you that the treatment of Palestinians has been horrific, Kipp, it often seems like the Palestinians themselves are their own worst enemy. It seems like from the beginning of Jewish settlement in the area the Palestinians have been led by a series of truly awful leaders whose tactics and attitudes do as much as Israel ever did to hold their people back and deprive them of the world’s sympathy.
The religious issue has another complication, as well, one which I personally find extremely distasteful. There seems to be a large number of ‘Christian Zionists’ in the United States, usually Christian dispensationalists, who believe that Israel’s foundation is a signal for the end times. They’re often more rabid than even the most far right Israeli hawks, being several thousand miles from the consequences of their beliefs, and they’re pretty much all 100% pro-Israel at the expense of justice for anyone who lives in the area and doesn’t happen to be Jewish. Very creepy and a very harmful influence, and I think the viewpoint is disturbingly more common in the American fundamentalist community than it should be.
But hey, we’ve got a Democrat in office now, so it’s much better than it could have been.

Palestinian leadership has been atrocious, there is no doubt. In fact they have been utilized as victims by their neighbors in order to distract Arab attention away from authoritative regimes. But this doesn’t have to be an eternal thing. I want the Palestinians to have their own state and I want Israel to back off their encroachment. I just believe it is a cause worth supporting.
Christian Zionists are the scourge of the earth. There are many in Washington who attend to their ideals. It is sickening.
Hope All is well in Taiwan. Would love for you to post a column about the Island nation.
